Local historian, Colin Reid, talks about his latest book which delves into the story of the Worthing typhoid epidemic when over a hundred of the town’s inhabitants died.
In 1893, out of a population of just over 16,000 over 1,400 residents of Worthing and the villages of Broadwater and West Tarring became ill with typhoid and, of those, at least 194 died. Hear how this happened after the sinking a new well for water that became contaminated with sewage. Learn how the town councillors and medical officer of health reacted.
