Sussex Burials Index

The Sussex Burials Index covers burials in parish church yards and non-conformist burial grounds for the years 1538 – 1900. There are now over 950,000 entries, and the Index is almost complete, although largely unchecked.  It should be noted that the Index does not cover burials in civic and metropolitan cemeteries which took over many burials in urban areas in the nineteenth century, when the parish church graveyards became full.  Any enquiry about burials which may have taken place in these cemeteries should be addressed to the relevant authority.

The index has been compiled from a number of sources, including transcripts and original registers. Bishops Transcripts have also been used to fill gaps in the main registers, or where the latter have been unavailable.

National Burial Index

The FHF Publishes the National Burial Index and the SFHG contributed its burial records.

NBI V3 has over 18.4 million burials. Sussex contributors have provided over 300,000. The SFHG's collection of burials records is part of our Tombstones and Burials Index, which also includes monumental inscriptions, and is being added to the SFHG Data Archive hosted by Frontis.

There is more detail of the National Burial Index at the Family History Federation website.
