Sussex People Index (SPI)

The Sussex People Index consists of any names that anyone can submit from anywhere - the conditions are that the event reported must happen in Sussex or to a Sussex person;
  • there must be an identifiable source (not a Website please)
  • information from;
    • tax records,
    • settlement orders,
    • masters and apprentices,
    • landowners,
    • licences issued to publicans,
    • magistrates,
    • churchwardens,
  • names taken from a book which has been indexed, etc. (Note that index entries from books must not be scanned but typed lest there is breach of copyright.)¬†
Please not baptisms, burials, memorial inscriptions, census, or pre 1837 marriages which all have their own indexes.

Obtaining Information from S.P.I.

  • check on the SFHG Data Archive Site which has recently been updated
  • the SPI has some data not included in the Data Archive
  • for all entries for a surname, send the surname
  • to have a search for a particular person, send the surname and forename and approximate date(s) and perhaps conjectured location within Sussex
